We will explain the who the characters are in Peace like a River. We are also going to show how the characters evolved throughout the novel.
"How many times do you let a dog bite you, before you put him down?" (91) Chapter of the trial referring to Davy. This shows how angry Davy was at Basca and Finch. This was practically the quote that put Davy into jail. Without saying this Davy might not have been prosecuted accuratley for premeditadted murder.
"They're all gone; our compliments to Mrs. DeCuellar,"(73) Jeremiah complimenting Mr. DeCuellar on his wife's pickles. When Mrs. DeCuellar made those pickles it showed how nice of a woman she was. Later in this novel she makes the Lands a wonderful breakfast.
"We and the world my children, will always be at war. Retreat is impossible. Arm yourselves." (4) Jeremiah Land referring to the "Worst night of all our lives." This really shows what kind of a man Jeremiah is. Although he is tough he is a kind man that is out to look for his family. This also shows how the town is reacting to the murder.
"Such a griper. Whine all day long. Probably God sent the whale so he could get three days of peace and quiet." (168) Swede referring to how Jonah was less godly than her father. "You yourself have lied twice since stepping in here." (160) Jeremiah talking to Mr. Andreeson about having lied to him in the trailer. This shows exactly what kind of man Andreeson is and how Mr. Land is not afraid of him.
I chose to add this picture because it has a westernish ( no it is not a word) feel to it and the family is in the West or rather central. Along with that Swede has a love for the outlaws of the west so I felt that this illustrated the love that Swede has for the west. (outlaw123)
Why do you think Swede has such a great interest in literature, who may have influenced her?
(outlaw123) I think Swede has such a great interest in literature because literature is her escape. When Swede writes, she tells the story so she can make what ever she wants happen. If Swede's day was not going well, she could write a happy story that could make her feel better or Swede could vent, by writing about what had happened. I think that Swede's father, Jeremiah Land, has infulenced Swede and her writings. Jeremiah bought Swede a typewriter, so that Swede was able to get her stories out faster.
Do you think that Davy will ever give himself up?
(outlaw123)Yes, I think that eventually Davy will give up on this long, complicated hiding and turn himself in. He is too stressed because of all of the police on him, and will not be able to take it. Also, if Jape Waltzer continues to treat Davy as a slave, he will start to think that prison is not too bad; therefore, he will leave the cabin and move to the cell.
Do you feel that August had wanted Davy to be caught or to have kept running?
(outlaw123) I feel that August knew that Davy should turn himself in, but if Davy did then Davy would be in trouble. August gave Davy the car to use, which supports that August feels both ways. I feel that August only said for Davy to turn himself in because that is what Birdie wanted, but I feel that he really wanted Davy to keep running. August is scared for Davy, for the consequences are great for what Davy had done, and by running Davy made it worse.
